The paper and how to score full marks
This unit maps the HSSC-II English paper question by question: marks, what each question tests, how long to spend on it and how FBISE's own model answers are written. Use it first to plan, and last to revise the answer formulas before the exam.
Learning outcomes (4)
- Know the paper pattern and the marks of every question.
- Plan time so every question gets its share.
- Use a fixed answer shape for comprehension, summary, poetry, novel and essay questions.
- Avoid the presentation mistakes that lose easy marks.
The paper at a glanceOften examined
The HSSC-II English paper (National Curriculum 2022-23) has 100 marks: Section A is 20 MCQs in 25 minutes on a separate bubble sheet; Sections B and C carry 80 marks in 2 hours 35 minutes. About 30% of marks test knowledge, 50% understanding and 20% application, so most questions ask you to use a rule, not to recite it.

Time plan for 2 hours 35 minutesOften examined
Marks per minute should guide you. Spend time where marks are, and never let one question eat another's time.
| Question | Marks | Time | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read the whole paper, choose OR options and essay topic | 5 min | Tick your choices; jot 4 essay points in the margin | |
| Q2 comprehension (read passage, 5 answers) | 20 | 35 min | About 7 min per answer |
| Q2 (i) summary and title | 8 | 15 min | Points list first, then write once |
| Q3 A poetry + Q3 B novel | 12 | 20 min | 8 min poetry, 12 min novel answer |
| Q4 essay | 12 | 35 min | 3 min plan, 28 min write, 4 min check |
| Q5 A, B, C | 18 | 20 min | Editing first, then the blanks |
| Q6 and Q7 | 10 | 12 min | Write five careful answers; extra attempts earn nothing, so check your five instead |
| Final check | 13 min | Spelling, tenses, question numbers, underlining in Q5 A |
Section A: getting 20 out of 20Often examined
- Read the whole stem, especially the words in bold or underlined and the exact task: 'underlined part is a/an', 'best synonym', 'negative connotation'.
- Name the job before you look at the options: is the underlined part doing the work of a noun, an adjective or an adverb? Is it a phrase (no subject and verb) or a clause (has both)?
- Eliminate: two options are usually clearly wrong. Decide between the last two by the rule, not by feel.
- For vocabulary in context, put each option into the sentence; the right one keeps the sentence's meaning and part of speech.
- For figures of speech, ask: is there 'like/as' (simile), is a non-human thing doing a human action (personification), is it impossible exaggeration (hyperbole), are opposites side by side (oxymoron)?
- For fiction MCQs, remember the plot order: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
- Keep 3 minutes at the end to check that every bubble is filled in the right row.
| MCQ family (2026 papers) | Typical stem | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Parts of speech | 'Her courage helped her...' underlined word is: abstract noun | 2 |
| Phrases and clauses | 'I will call you when I arrive home.' underlined part is: adverb clause | 3 |
| Sentences and agreement | Choose the correct sentence: 'Each of the students has passed.' | 4 |
| Tenses and verbals | 'Running daily improves health.' underlined word is: gerund | 5 |
| Prepositions | Which sentence uses a compound preposition? | 6 |
| Word forms | Which word is the noun form of 'advocate'? advocacy | 8 |
| Vocabulary and connotation | Which word carries a negative connotation? stubborn / arrogant | 9 |
| Idioms and figurative phrases | 'heart of stone' suggests lack of sympathy | 10 |
| Figures of speech | 'Opportunity knocked at the door' shows personification | 11 |
| Elements of fiction | Which element introduces the characters and setting? exposition | 13 |
| Reading skills | Which sentence contains an opinion / shows cause and effect? | 14 |
How to write answers that get full marksOften examined
Comprehension answers (4 marks)
Start with a sentence that answers the question using its key words. Add two or three points from the passage in your own words, then a closing sentence that links back to the question. 60 to 90 words is enough. FBISE's own model answers follow exactly this shape, and use 'Firstly, secondly, thirdly' when a question asks for ways, causes or factors.
Summary (8 marks)
List the main point of each paragraph, remove examples, figures and repetition, change direct speech into reported speech, and write one paragraph of about one-third of the passage in your own words, with a short title on top. FBISE's model summary of a 300-word passage is about 150 words and uses the passage's order.
Poetry (2 marks each)
Name the device, quote the words that show it, then give its effect in one sentence. For a paraphrase, write the two lines as plain modern prose in one or two sentences. For rhyme scheme, label the end sounds (abab) and name the rhyming words.
Novel question (6 marks)
90 to 120 words: define the term in two sentences, then apply it to The Pearl with names and events (Kino, Juana, Coyotito, the doctor, the pearl buyers, the trackers), and end with what it adds to the story.
Essay (12 marks)
Five paragraphs: an introduction with a hook and a thesis, three body paragraphs that follow the outline in order (topic sentence, explanation, a Pakistani example), and a conclusion with a way forward. 280 to 300 words; paragraphs clearly separated; formal words; no contractions.
Grammar blanks (Q5 to Q7)
Read the whole paragraph first, fill the easy blanks, then decide the rest by the rule. Write only the answers the paper asks for, numbered clearly; in Q5 A rewrite the whole paragraph and underline each correction.
Language quality: the marks inside every answer
Every subjective answer is also marked for grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Short, correct sentences score better than long, broken ones.
- Keep one tense: summaries and comprehension answers in the present tense ('The writer says...'), narratives in the past.
- Check subject-verb agreement in every sentence you write ('The number of smokers is...', 'Each of them has...').
- Use linking words to show logic: moreover, however, therefore, as a result, in conclusion.
- Avoid slang, contractions (don't, it's), 'etc.', and SMS spellings.
- Spell the passage's key words correctly: they are printed on the paper.
- Write legibly with clear margins; leave a line between answers.
