Surah Muhammad is the 47th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 38 ayat and 4 rukus, revealed in the early Madinah period around 1 to 2 AH. It is also called Al-Qital. It explains why the deeds of the disbelievers are wasted, gives the rules of fighting, prisoners and peace, promises Allah's help to those who help His religion, describes the rivers of Paradise and exposes the hypocrites who fear the command to fight. FBISE asked in the model paper why the disbelievers' deeds are wasted and printed ayah 47:12; topic 14 of the long questions (war, peace and prisoners) comes from this surah.

Surah Muhammad is the 47th surah of the Quran. It is a Madani surah that was revealed in the early Madinah period, when the Muslims had been given permission to fight but the first battle had not yet been fought. It tells the believers the law of war and peace, tells why the deeds of the disbelievers come to nothing, and exposes the hypocrites of Madinah.

Why is it called Muhammad?
The name of the Prophet (ﷺ) comes in the second ayah, where the believers are described as those who believe in what was sent down upon Muhammad (ﷺ), and it is the truth from their Lord. The surah is named after this word. Because it speaks mostly about fighting («قتال», 47:20), it is also called Surah Al-Qital.
And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition
Period and occasion of revelation
The ayat show that the Muslims were still in the early days of Madinah. The Quraish of Makkah had driven the Prophet (ﷺ) out (47:13), the Muslims were surrounded by enemies, and the hypocrites were waiting for a chance to turn away. Permission to fight had been given, but the Muslims were not yet ready for it and some of them were asking for a command to fight. The surah was revealed to prepare them: it gave the rules of fighting, told them that the disbelievers' deeds are void and that Allah will help those who help His religion, and told the hypocrites that their cowardice would be exposed.
Central theme
The central theme is the difference between the people of truth and the people of falsehood: the deeds of the disbelievers are wasted, the deeds of the believers are rewarded, and the believers are commanded to stand firm in the fight for the truth, with the rules of war and peace, trust in Allah's help and exposure of the hypocrites.

47:1 to 3, 8 to 9, 28, 32 to 34Why the deeds of the disbelievers are made voidکافروں کے اعمال ضائع ہونے کی وجہOften examined
The surah opens by saying that Allah makes void the deeds of those who disbelieve and turn people away from His path (47:1). It then gives the reasons clearly.
Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah - He will waste their deeds (1) And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition (2) That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah present to the people their comparisons (3)
The reasons given in the surah
- They followed falsehood («الباطل»), while the believers followed the truth from their Lord (47:3).
- They disliked what Allah revealed, so He made their deeds worthless (47:9).
- They followed what angered Allah and disliked what earns His pleasure (47:28).
- They disbelieved, turned people away from Allah's path and opposed the Messenger (ﷺ) after guidance was clear to them (47:32).
But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds (8) That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds (9)
The meaning is that a deed is accepted by Allah only when it rests on faith and on following His revelation. Good works done without faith, or by those who fight the truth, have no value in the Hereafter, however fine they look in the world.
The believers, by contrast
Those who believe, do good and accept what was sent down upon Muhammad (ﷺ) have their misdeeds removed and their condition set right (47:2). Those killed in Allah's way will never have their deeds wasted (47:4). The believers are also warned not to cancel their own deeds: obey Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ) and do not invalidate your deeds (47:33).
Often examined
So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allah - never will He waste their deeds
The rules in 47:4
- When you meet the disbelievers in battle, fight them firmly until you have broken their strength («
- Then secure the prisoners firmly so they cannot escape.
- After that there are two options: release them as a favour («مَنّ») without ransom, or release them for ransom («فِدَاء»). The Islamic state decides which is better in the circumstances.
- This goes on until the war lays down its burdens («حَتّٰى تَضَعَ الْحَرْبُ أَوْزَارَهَا»), that is, until the fighting ends.
Allah says He could have destroyed the disbelievers Himself, but He ordered fighting to test some of you by means of others (47:4). This shows that jihad is a trial for the believers, not an act of revenge. A captive is to be treated humanely and not tortured. For example, Hazrat Thumamah bin Uthal (RA) was taken prisoner and released by the Prophet (ﷺ) as a favour, and he then accepted Islam (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Peace and not showing weakness (47:35)
So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds
- Do not weaken («لَا تَهِنُوْا») and call for peace while you have the upper hand.
- Allah is with you and will never reduce the reward of your deeds.
- This does not forbid peace itself: a peace made from a position of strength and for the good of Islam is allowed (see 8:61 in Surah Al-Anfal). What is forbidden is begging for peace out of fear.
Firmness in the cause: related points
- Those who are killed in Allah's way will not have their deeds wasted, and Allah will guide them and set their condition right (47:4 to 5).
- The Hereafter is the real life; this world is only amusement and diversion (47:36).
- The enemies of Islam can never harm Allah, and their efforts against the Messenger (ﷺ) will be wasted (47:32).
47:7, 47:11, 47:13If you help Allah, He will help youاگر تم اللہ کی مدد کرو تو وہ تمہاری مدد کرے گاOften examined
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet
This is a promise made to the believers. «تَنْصُرُوا اللّٰهَ» does not mean that Allah needs help. It means supporting His religion: believing, obeying Him and His Messenger (ﷺ), spreading the truth and fighting in His way when it is needed. In return Allah gives two things.
- He will help you («يَنْصُرْكُمْ»), against your enemies.
- He will make your feet firm («يُثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَكُمْ»), that is, keep you steadfast in the field and on the path of faith.
The other side
For those who disbelieve there is ruin and Allah makes their deeds void (47:8). The reason is given in the next ayah: Allah is the protector of the believers, and the disbelievers have no protector (47:11).
That is because Allah is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector
To warn the Quraish, the surah points to the earlier nations: many a town stronger than Makkah, which drove out the Prophet (ﷺ), was destroyed and had no helper (47:13). «قَرْيَةٍ» means a town.
47:12, 47:15Paradise and its riversجنت اور اس کی نہریںOften examined
The surah contrasts the end of the believers and the disbelievers. The believers who do good will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, while the disbelievers enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire is their home (47:12).
Indeed, Allah will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them
- The special feature of Paradise: gardens with rivers flowing beneath them.
- The disbelievers use the world like animals, only eating and enjoying with no thought of the Hereafter.
- Their final abode is the Fire.
The four rivers (47:15)
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines
| River | Description in the ayah |
|---|---|
| Water | Unaltered, never spoiled |
| Milk | Its taste never changes |
| Wine | Delicious to those who drink |
| Honey | Purified and clear |
Besides these, the people of Paradise will have fruits of every kind and forgiveness from their Lord. Against this stands the picture of those who abide in the Fire and are given scalding water that cuts their intestines to pieces (47:15).
47:16, 47:20 to 30The hypocrites and the command to fightمنافقین اور لڑائی کا حکمOften examined
Those who believe say, "Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been] (20) Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them (21)
Their conduct
- Before a command to fight came, the believers said, 'Why has a surah not been revealed?' (47:20). When a clear surah mentioning fighting was sent down, those with a disease in their hearts, the hypocrites, looked at the Prophet (ﷺ) like a man fainting at the approach of death.
- Allah says that obedience and a good word would have been better for them, and if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better (47:21).
- If they turn away, they may spread corruption on the earth and cut the ties of kinship; such people are cursed and made deaf and blind (47:22 to 23).
- They do not reflect on the Quran, as if their hearts were locked (47:24).
- They went back to disbelief after guidance was clear, Satan made it appear fair to them and gave them false hopes (47:25).
- They secretly told the enemies of Allah's revelation, 'We will obey you in some matters' (47:26). Their end is that the angels will strike their faces and backs at death (47:27).
That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds
The reason is repeated: they followed what angered Allah and disliked what earns His pleasure, so He made their deeds worthless (47:28).
Allah will expose them (47:29 to 30)
And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allah knows your deeds
Those with a disease in their hearts think that Allah will never bring their hatred into the open. Allah says that He could point them out to the Prophet (ﷺ) by their marks, but they can be known by the tone of their speech. Allah knows all the deeds of the people (47:29 to 30).
47:31 to 38The test of the believersمومنوں کی آزمائشOften examined
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs
Allah declares that He will surely test the believers until He makes known those who strive and are patient. The word «لَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ» means 'We will surely test you'. The test is not for Allah's knowledge, since He already knows, but to make the truth clear in the open and to separate the sincere from the pretenders.
- The test makes known the mujahidin, those who strive for Allah's cause.
- It makes known the patient («
- Allah also tests the reports about the people, that is, their conduct is brought into the open (47:31).
Obedience and spending (47:33 to 38)
- Obey Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ) and do not cancel your deeds (47:33).
- Those who die as disbelievers after turning people away from Allah's path will never be forgiven (47:34).
- The worldly life is only amusement and play; Allah does not ask for all your wealth (47:36 to 37).
- Whoever is stingy is stingy against himself; Allah is free of need and you are the needy. If you turn away, He will replace you with another people who will not be like you (47:38).
Here you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allah - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allah is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you
Rukus 1 to 2, ayat 1 to 19Rukus 1 to 2: believers and disbelievers
Ruku 1: The deeds of the two groups (47:1 to 11)
The ruku opens with the disbelievers' deeds being wasted and the believers' sins being removed, with the reason that one group follows falsehood and the other the truth (47:1 to 3). Then comes the law of fighting and prisoners (47:4). Allah promises to guide and amend the condition of those killed in His way (47:4 to 6), tells the believers that if they help Allah He will help them (47:7), and ends with the destruction of earlier nations and the fact that Allah is the protector of the believers (47:10 to 11).
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet
Ruku 2: Paradise, the Fire and the hypocrites (47:12 to 19)
The believers enter gardens with rivers while the disbelievers live like cattle (47:12). The Makkans are warned by the fate of stronger towns (47:13). The picture of Paradise with its four rivers is set against the Fire (47:15). Some hypocrites listen to the Prophet (ﷺ) without understanding and their hearts are sealed (47:16), while those who accept guidance are increased in guidance (47:17). The Hour will come suddenly, so the Prophet (ﷺ) is told to know that there is no deity but Allah and to seek forgiveness for himself and for the believing men and women (47:18 to 19).
Indeed, Allah will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them
Teachings
- A deed is valuable only when it comes from faith and follows revelation.
- Help Allah's religion and Allah will help you.
- Do not live like animals, only eating and enjoying; remember the Hereafter.
- Seek forgiveness for yourself and for the believers (47:19).
Rukus 3 to 4, ayat 20 to 38Rukus 3 to 4: hypocrites, obedience and spending
Ruku 3: The hypocrites and the command to fight (47:20 to 28)
The hypocrites shrink from the command to fight (47:20 to 21) and fall into corruption (47:22 to 23). They do not reflect on the Quran (47:24), they turn back to disbelief and secretly promise to obey the enemies of Allah's revelation in some matters (47:25 to 26), and the angels will strike them at death (47:27). The ruku ends with the reason: they followed what angered Allah and disliked what earns His pleasure, so He made their deeds worthless (47:28).
Ruku 4: Exposure of the hypocrites, the test, obedience and spending (47:29 to 38)
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs
Allah says He can mark out the hypocrites, but they are known by the tone of their speech (47:29 to 30). He will surely test the believers until the strivers and the patient are known (47:31). Those who oppose the Messenger (ﷺ) after guidance cannot harm Allah (47:32). The believers are told to obey Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ) and not to cancel their deeds (47:33), warned that those who die as disbelievers are not forgiven (47:34), told not to weaken and ask for peace when they have the upper hand (47:35), reminded that the world is amusement and play (47:36), and called to spend in Allah's way, with the warning that Allah can replace a people who turn away (47:36 to 38).
So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds

So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens.
