Write a note on national security versus family love in the light of Surah Al-Mumtahanah.
Solutionحل
  • National security comes first: the believers must not take the enemies of Allah and of the Muslims as allies or give them secrets out of affection (60:1), for the enemy would harm them if he gained the upper hand (60:2), and relatives and children will not benefit on the Day of Resurrection (60:3). The case was Hazrat Hatib's (RA) letter to the Quraish, written out of love for his family in Makkah.
  • Family love is not forbidden in itself: kindness and justice to non-Muslim relatives who do not fight the Muslims are allowed (60:8); what is forbidden is betraying the community for their sake.

Introduction

Surah An-Nisa teaches the sanctity of human life. Allah forbids killing oneself or one another (4:29 to 30) and in 4:92 to 93 He explains the killing of a believer by mistake and on purpose and gives the ruling of each. The jurists, on the basis of the Quran and the Sunnah, also describe a third kind between the two.

Part 1 (4 marks): The kinds of killing

1. Deliberate killing («

The killing of a person on purpose, with the intention to kill and with a weapon or means that usually kills. Allah speaks about it in 4:93: whoever kills a believer intentionally.

2. Killing by mistake («

Killing without any intention to kill, for example shooting at a target or an animal and hitting a man. The ayah says that it is not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake.

Surah An-Nisa 4:92–93

And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake - then the freeing of a believing slave and a compensation payment presented to the deceased's family [is required] unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if the deceased was from a people at war with you and he was a believer - then [only] the freeing of a believing slave; and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty - then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively, [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allah. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise (92) But whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment (93)

3. Killing oneself (suicide) (4:29 and 4:30)

Allah says: do not kill yourselves, for Allah is merciful to you (4:29). The commentators say that the words include killing oneself and killing one another, since the believers are like one body.

4. A note: quasi-deliberate killing («

This kind is not named in the Quran. The jurists (and most of them accept it; Imam Malik (RH) did not) mean by it a killing with the intention to hit but with something that does not usually kill, such as a stick or a whip, and the man dies. It has the sin of intention, no qisas, and a heavy blood money with the kaffarah.

Part 2 (4 marks): Their rulings

1. Ruling for deliberate killing
  1. In this world: qisas, that is, the killer is killed in return for the victim (Al-Baqarah 2:178; Al-Ma'idah 5:45). The heirs of the dead may forgive the killer or accept the blood money, and then qisas falls (Sahih Bukhari). The punishment is carried out by the court, not by individuals.
  2. In the Hereafter: Hell for ever, the anger of Allah, His curse and a great punishment (4:93). The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the first matter to be judged among people on the Day of Judgement will be blood (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). (The commentators say that this ruling in its full force is for the one who regards killing a believer as lawful or does not repent; the matter is left to Allah.)
2. Ruling for killing by mistake (4:92)
  1. Diyat: the blood money is paid to the family of the dead, unless they give it up as charity. The Prophet (ﷺ) fixed it at one hundred camels (or its value).
  2. Kaffarah: freeing a believing slave; whoever cannot find or afford one must fast two months consecutively, as repentance from Allah.
  3. If the dead was a believer from a people at war with you, only the freeing of a slave is needed; if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty, the diyat to his family and the freeing of a slave are both needed.
  4. There is no qisas in it, and no punishment of Hell, because there was no intention.
3. Ruling for suicide (4:29 and 4:30)

It is forbidden. Whoever does it in aggression and injustice, Allah will drive him into a Fire, and that is easy for Allah (4:30). The Prophet (ﷺ) said that whoever kills himself with something will be punished with the same in the Fire (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The funeral prayer is, however, said for the dead (the jurists), and his case is left with Allah.

4. Ruling for quasi-deliberate killing (the jurists)

No qisas, but a heavier diyat than for a mistake, paid by the killer's family (the aqilah), and the kaffarah.

Conclusion

Surah An-Nisa protects life: deliberate killing is the greatest crime and has qisas and Hell (4:93), killing by mistake has the diyat and the kaffarah (4:92), and killing oneself is also forbidden (4:29 to 30). Its purpose is to make every life sacred and to give justice and mercy to the family of the dead.

Introduction

Surah Al-Munafiqun (63rd surah, 11 ayat, Madani) was revealed on the campaign against Banu al-Mustaliq and describes the hypocrites of Madinah, who professed faith but were disbelievers at heart.

Part 1: Definition (2 marks)

1. Definition of hypocrisy («

«نفاق» means to show Islam with the tongue while hiding disbelief or ill will in the heart. The word is said to come from «نافقاء», the hidden second exit of a desert rat's hole, because the hypocrite keeps a way out on both sides. The hypocrite is called «مُنَافِق». Hypocrisy of belief («نفاقِ اعتقادی») is real disbelief hidden behind a claim of faith; hypocrisy of action («نفاقِ عملی») is a believer's bad habit that resembles it.

Their leader was Abdullah bin Ubayy. His saying 'the more honoured will expel the more humble' (63:8) was reported to the Prophet (ﷺ) by Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (RA) and was confirmed by revelation (Sahih Bukhari).

Part 2: Signs and conduct (2 or 4 marks, see the note)

3. False testimony (63:1)

They come to the Prophet (ﷺ) and say 'We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' The words are true but their hearts do not agree with their tongues, so Allah testifies that they are liars. Truth in words without faith in the heart is hypocrisy.

Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:1

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars

4. Oaths as a shield (63:2)

They make false oaths a cover to save themselves from punishment and to hide their real nature. They also turn people away from the way of Allah by their words and plots. The Quran calls this evil conduct.

5. Belief and then disbelief; sealed hearts (63:3)

They accepted faith in appearance, then turned back to disbelief, so a seal was put on their hearts and they no longer understand. Repeated deceit finally takes away the ability to see the truth.

6. Fine looks and smooth speech, but empty inside (63:4)

Their bodies please the eye and when they speak people listen, but they are like pieces of wood propped up against a wall: they have shape but no life or faith inside. The Quran teaches not to judge people only by their dress or speech.

7. Cowardice and suspicion (63:4)

They think every shout is against them. Because of their guilty conscience, they are always afraid of being exposed. They are the real enemy, so the believers are told to beware of them.

Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:4

And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded

8. Arrogance towards repentance (63:5 to 6)

When it is said to them, 'Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you,' they turn their heads aside and walk away proudly. Since they do not even admit their fault, it makes no difference whether the Prophet (ﷺ) asks forgiveness for them or not. Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient.

9. Miserliness and economic boycott (63:7)

They say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband.' They wanted to starve the Muslims out of the Prophet's (ﷺ) company. The Quran replies that the treasuries of the heavens and the earth belong to Allah, but the hypocrites do not understand.

10. Pride and enmity (63:8)

They threaten that the 'more honoured' will drive out the 'more humble' from Madinah. Allah answers that all honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger (ﷺ) and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.

Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:8

They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said: the signs of a hypocrite are three, he lies when he speaks, breaks his promise and betrays a trust (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Part 3: Condemnation (4 or 2 marks, see the note)

  • Allah Himself testifies that they are liars (63:1) and calls their deeds evil (63:2).
  • Their hearts are sealed, so they no longer understand (63:3).
  • They are called the enemy, the believers are told to beware of them, and the curse 'May Allah destroy them' is pronounced on them. How they are deluded away from the truth! (63:4).
  • Forgiveness is closed to them: even the Messenger's (ﷺ) prayer will not benefit them, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient (63:6).
  • They are described as people who do not understand (63:7) and do not know (63:8), so they are shown to be foolish and humiliated, not honoured.
  • In the Hereafter their place is the lowest depth of the Fire (An-Nisa 4:145).

Conclusion

Hypocrisy is a hidden disease: faith on the tongue and disbelief in the heart. Allah condemns it, so a believer must keep word and heart together and keep his wealth and children from making him forget Allah (63:9).

Note. The paper prints the split as 2+2+4. The three parts of the question are definition, signs and conduct, and condemnation, so the most likely reading is 2+2+4 in that order: 2 marks for the definition, 2 for the signs and conduct and 4 for the condemnation. The answer below gives enough points for either reading: if the 4 marks go to the signs and conduct, write six or more of its points; if they go to the condemnation, write four or more of its points.

Introduction

Surah Al-Ma'idah, revealed in the last period of the Prophet's (ﷺ) life, describes the condition of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians): the Book and covenant they were given, the evils into which they fell, and what came upon them as a result. It is a warning for the Muslims and an invitation to the People of the Book (5:12 to 18, 41 to 44, 59 to 81).

Part 1 (4 marks): The evils of the People of the Book

A. Intellectual evils
  • Breaking the covenant: Allah took a firm covenant from them and they broke it (5:13); the Christians forgot a large part of what they were taught (5:14).
  • Distorting the Book: they changed the words from their places and hid much of the Scripture (5:13, 15, 41).
  • Shirk: some said that Allah is the Messiah, son of Maryam, and others that Allah is the third of three. Allah calls it disbelief, and Hazrat Isa (AS) himself said: worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord (5:17, 72, 73).
  • False pride: they said we are the children of Allah and His beloved, and Allah replied: then why does He punish you for your sins? (5:18).
Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:13

So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their [proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:72–73

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers (72) They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment (73)

B. Moral evils
  • Deceit and breach of trust: some deceit is always found among them except a few (5:13).
  • Listening to lies and eating the unlawful («سُحْت»), such as bribes (5:42, 62).
  • Envy and mockery: some made the religion of the Muslims a joke, and the Jews were the most intense in enmity to the believers (5:57, 82).
  • Killing the prophets: they denied a party of messengers and killed another party (5:70).
C. Social evils
  • They did not forbid one another from evil, and their rabbis and scholars did not stop sinful talk and unlawful earning (5:63, 78 to 79).
  • Hastening into sin and aggression, and spreading corruption in the land and kindling the fire of war (5:62, 64).
  • Alliance with the disbelievers against the believers, and bitter sects (5:14, 80).
Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:78–79

Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed (78) They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing (79)

Part 2 (4 marks): The consequences of these evils

  • Curse and hard hearts: Allah cursed them for breaking the covenant and hardened their hearts (5:13); those who disbelieved among them were cursed by the tongue of Hazrat Dawud (AS) and Hazrat Isa (AS) (5:78).
  • Division and enmity: Allah cast enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection (5:14, 64).
  • Disgrace in this world and a great punishment in the Hereafter for those whose hearts Allah did not purify (5:41).
  • Paradise forbidden and the Fire as the refuge of those who commit shirk, and a painful punishment if they do not stop (5:72 to 73).
  • Allah's anger and eternal punishment (5:80); those cursed and made apes and pigs are mentioned as the worst in position (5:60).
  • Failure of their plots: whenever they kindled the fire of war Allah put it out (5:64), and they stand on nothing until they uphold the revealed Books (5:68). Had they done so they would have had plenty from above and below (5:66).

Guidance for us

The Muslims must hold fast to the Quran, keep tauhid pure, avoid bribery and breach of trust, enjoin good and forbid evil, and stay united, so that they do not suffer what the People of the Book suffered.

Conclusion

The People of the Book fell into false belief, distortion, deceit, unlawful earning, enmity and silence about evil, and so they were cursed, divided and disgraced and threatened with the Fire. The lesson for the Muslims is to follow the Book of Allah sincerely.

Introduction

Surah Al-Mumtahanah (the 60th surah, 13 ayat, 2 rukus) was revealed about 8 AH, before the conquest of Makkah, when Hazrat Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (RA) wrote a secret letter to the Quraish about the Prophet's (ﷺ) plan (Sahih Bukhari). The surah teaches the Muslims the principles and etiquette of their relations with non-Muslims: firm loyalty to faith and community, together with justice and kindness to the peaceful.

(a) The principles of relations (4 marks)

1. No alliance with the enemies of Allah (60:1 to 2)

Believers must not take as allies those who deny the truth and have driven out the Prophet (ﷺ) and the believers because they believed in Allah, and must not show them love or give them secret help. The reason is that these people, if they get the upper hand, will be enemies and harm the believers with their hands and tongues.

Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:1

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you have come out for jihad in My cause and seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them affection, but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way

2. Faith and loyalty before family ties (60:3)

Relatives and children will not benefit on the Day of Resurrection, when Allah will judge. Love of family must not become a reason for betraying the faith or the community.

3. The example of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS): clear separation from shirk (60:4 to 6)

Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and his companions told their people that they were free of them and of what they worshipped besides Allah, and that enmity would remain until they believed in Allah alone. They relied on Allah and prayed not to be made a trial for the disbelievers. The believer keeps his creed and identity without compromise.

4. Kindness and justice to the peaceful, no friendship with the aggressors (60:8 to 9)

Allah does not forbid you to be righteous and just to those who have not fought you over religion or driven you out of your homes; Allah loves the just (60:8). He forbids friendship only with those who fight you over religion, expel you or help in your expulsion (60:9). So the principle depends on the conduct of the other side.

Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:8

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly

Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:9

Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers

5. Hope of friendship and respect for treaties (60:7, 60:10)

Allah may create affection between the believers and their present enemies (60:7). Treaties are to be honoured: after the Treaty of Hudaybiyah the believing women who came to Madinah were examined and not returned, but their disbelieving husbands were repaid the dower they had given (60:10).

(b) The etiquettes in the present age (4 marks)

  • Justice and kindness to all peaceful non-Muslims: neighbours, fellow citizens and minorities (60:8); the Prophet (ﷺ) warned that whoever kills a person under a covenant will not smell the fragrance of Paradise (Sahih Bukhari).
  • Keeping treaties and agreements with other states and communities, and no breach of trust (60:10).
  • Putting national and community security before personal ties: no passing of secrets to a hostile side, as in the case of Hazrat Hatib (RA) (60:1 to 3).
  • Firm identity without hatred: reject shirk as Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) did, but do not insult others' beliefs and do not force anyone to accept Islam (60:4; compare 2:256).
  • Dawah by good character and wisdom, hoping for a change of heart (60:7); trade and diplomacy with peaceful nations are allowed, but no alliance with oppressors (60:9).

Conclusion

Surah Al-Mumtahanah gives a balanced policy: loyalty to Allah and the community comes first and there is no friendship with those who fight and expel the believers, but justice, kindness, trade and honouring of treaties continue with the peaceful. In this way the Muslim stays firm in faith and also a good neighbour and citizen.
