Surah Al-Hadid

Class 12 Tarjama-tul-Quran, unit 8

Surah Al-Hadid is the 57th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 29 ayat and 4 rukus in para 27, and the first of the musabbihat. It was revealed in Madinah before the conquest of Makkah, when the Muslims needed wealth and sacrifice for their defence. It teaches Allah's greatness, spending in His way, the light of the believers and the darkness of the hypocrites, humility of hearts, the reality of the world and belief in destiny. It is named after iron (57:25). FBISE asks about its introduction, the proofs of Allah's power (model paper Q.2 (a)(iv)), 57:25 as an ayah question (model paper Q.2 (c)(i)), and the long topic of light and darkness in the Hereafter (topic 17).

Name and the reason for it

The surah is named «الْحَدِيْد» (iron) after the word in 57:25: "And We sent down iron, wherein is great military power and benefits for the people." It is a name of identification, not the main subject: the surah is about faith, spending and the reality of this world, and iron is mentioned as one of Allah's great favours to mankind.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:25

We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might

Period and background

  • The surah is Madani. It was revealed at a time when the Muslims were in great need of money and men to defend themselves, before the conquest of Makkah, which is why it speaks so strongly about spending and fighting (57:10).
  • There is no single incident behind it. It addresses three groups: the sincere believers, the weak in faith who hesitate to spend, and the hypocrites.
  • Shan-e-nuzul of 57:16: Hazrat Abdullah bin Masud (RA) said that only about four years passed between the Companions accepting Islam and Allah reproaching them with this ayah, "Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should humble themselves" (Sahih Muslim). It was a gentle reproach to hearts that had begun to relax after hardship.

Central theme

The central theme is a call to true faith and to the sacrifice of wealth and life for the sake of Allah, built on knowing Allah's greatness and on realising that this world is temporary. The believers are told to spend, to humble their hearts, to be sure of destiny and to uphold justice, while the hypocrites and the stingy are warned of darkness on the Day of Judgement.

Only well-known reports are given here. No hadith about the reward of reciting the whole surah is firmly established, so do not write one in the exam.

  • The musabbihat: Hazrat Irbad bin Sariyah (RA) reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the musabbihat (the surahs that begin with «سَبَّحَ / يُسَبِّحُ», of which Al-Hadid is the first) before sleeping, and said that among them is an ayah better than a thousand ayat (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).
  • The opening ayat (57:1 to 6) contain «هُوَ الْاَوَّلُ وَالْاٰخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ». The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a supplication for bedtime that explains these four names: "You are the First, nothing was before You; You are the Last, nothing is after You; You are the Manifest, nothing is above You; You are the Hidden, nothing is nearer than You" (Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (RA)).
  • Ayat 57:16 was a reproach to the Companions (Sahih Muslim, Hazrat Ibn Masud (RA)).

57:1 to 6, 57:17Allah's attributes and proofs of His perfect powerاللہ کی صفات اور قدرتِ کاملہ کے دلائلOften examined

The surah opens with the glorification of Allah by everything in the heavens and the earth, then in six ayat it shows who Allah is: the Mighty, the Wise, the Owner of dominion, the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, who is with His servants wherever they are. This is the foundation for the commands that follow.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:1–6

Whatever is in the heavens and earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise (1) His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent (2) He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing (3) It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing (4) His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. And to Allah are returned [all] matters (5) He causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night, and he is Knowing of that within the breasts (6)

The command

Surah Al-Hadid 57:7

Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors. For those who have believed among you and spent, there will be a great reward

  • Believe in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and spend out of what Allah has made you successors of (57:7). Wealth is a trust: the real owner is Allah and man holds it for a short time.
  • The reward of those who believe and spend is called great («اَجْرٌ كَبِيْرٌ»).
  • Why do you not spend in Allah's way while to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? (57:10). In the end everything will remain with Him.

Rank of the early spenders (57:10)

Surah Al-Hadid 57:10

And why do you not spend in the cause of Allah while to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward]. And Allah, with what you do, is Acquainted

  • Those who spent and fought before the conquest of Makkah are higher in rank than those who spent and fought after it, because they did so in the time of greatest danger and need.
  • To all, Allah has promised «الْحُسْنٰى» (the best reward), so the later believers are not denied.

The goodly loan (57:11 and 57:18)

Surah Al-Hadid 57:11

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward

A goodly loan («قَرْضًا حَسَنًا») means spending from lawful wealth, purely for Allah, with a sincere heart and without reproach. Allah calls it a loan to Himself out of His generosity, though He is not in need of anything, and promises to multiply it and give a noble reward («اَجْرٌ كَرِيْمٌ»). Ayah 57:18 repeats this for charitable men and women.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:18

Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward

Surah Al-Hadid 57:12–15

On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], "Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment (12) On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment (13) The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah (14) So today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination (15)

The scene

منظر

  • On the Day of Judgement the believing men and women will have their light running before them and on their right hands, and will be told the good news of gardens with rivers (57:12).
  • The hypocrite men and women will beg the believers, "Wait for us, that we may take some of your light" (57:13).
  • They will be told, "Go back and seek light", and a wall with a door will be set between them: mercy inside it, and torment outside (57:13).
  • They will call, "Were we not with you?" The reply will be, "Yes, but you led yourselves into temptation, waited, doubted and were deluded by false hopes until Allah's command came, and the Deceiver deceived you about Allah" (57:14).
  • No ransom will be accepted; the Fire is their refuge (57:15).

57:16 to 17Humility of heartsدلوں کا خشوع

Surah Al-Hadid 57:16–17

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient (16) Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand (17)

  • Allah asks the believers: has the time not come for your hearts to humble themselves at the remembrance of Allah and at the truth that has come down? (57:16). The ayah was revealed to wake up hearts that had grown relaxed (see the introduction).
  • Do not be like those given the Book before: a long time passed over them and their hearts hardened (57:16). The warning is for the People of the Book.
  • Allah gives life to the earth after its death (57:17). In the same way He revives hearts by His revelation.

57:20 to 21The reality of the worldدنیا کی حقیقتOften examined

Surah Al-Hadid 57:20

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion

What the world is

  • Five stages: play («لَعِبٌ»), amusement («لَهْوٌ»), adornment («زِيْنَةٌ»), mutual boasting («تَفَاخُرٌ») and rivalry in wealth and children («تَكَاثُرٌ فِي الْاَمْوَالِ وَالْاَوْلَادِ»).
  • Example: rain that makes a crop grow to please the farmers, then it dries, turns yellow and becomes broken straw (57:20).
  • The Hereafter has severe punishment, and forgiveness and pleasure from Allah. The world is only «مَتَاعُ الْغُرُوْرِ» (the enjoyment of delusion) (57:20).

The race (57:21)

Surah Al-Hadid 57:21

Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty

  • Hurry towards the forgiveness of your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers (57:21).
  • It is the favour of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills (57:21).

57:22 to 24Destiny and calamities

Surah Al-Hadid 57:22–24

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy (22) In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful (23) [Those] who are stingy and enjoin upon people stinginess. And whoever turns away - then indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy (24)

  • No calamity falls on the earth or on yourselves but it is already written in a record before Allah brings it into being; that is easy for Allah (57:22).
  • Reason (57:23): so that you do not grieve over what you lost, nor exult over what He gave you. Allah does not love everyone proud and boastful.
  • Those who are stingy and tell others to be stingy are warned: Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy (57:24).
  • Hadith: Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) was told by the Prophet (ﷺ) that if the whole community gathered to benefit or harm him, they could do only what Allah had written; the pens have been lifted and the pages are dry (Tirmidhi).
  • Lesson: faith in destiny keeps a believer free from despair in loss and from pride in success.

57:25Messengers, the Book, the balance and ironرسول، کتاب، میزان اور لوہاOften examined

  • Allah sent His messengers with clear signs («
  • He sent down with them the Book and the balance («الْكِتَابَ وَالْمِيْزَانَ»), so that people may uphold justice. The Book is the guidance and the balance is the standard of right and wrong, justice in rights and dealings.
  • He sent down iron, in which there is great military strength and many benefits for people (57:25). Iron stands for power to defend justice and for industry.
  • The purpose: so that Allah may know («لِيَعْلَمَ اللّٰهُ», i.e. make evident) who helps Him and His messengers unseen.
  • Ending attributes: «قَوِيٌّ عَزِيْزٌ», Allah is Powerful and Mighty.

57:26 to 29Monasticism and the double reward

Surah Al-Hadid 57:26–27

And We have already sent Noah and Abraham and placed in their descendants prophethood and scripture; and among them is he who is guided, but many of them are defiantly disobedient (26) Then We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except [that they did so] seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave the ones who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient (27)

  • Allah sent Hazrat Nuh and Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and placed prophethood and the Book in their offspring (57:26).
  • Then other messengers followed, and Hazrat Isa (AS), son of Maryam, was sent with the Injil. In the hearts of his followers Allah placed tenderness and mercy (57:27).
  • Monasticism («رَهْبَانِيَّةً») was invented by them: Allah did not prescribe it for them, but they adopted it seeking His pleasure, and still did not observe it as it should have been (57:27). Islam has no monasticism: when some Companions wished to give up marriage and sleep for worship, the Prophet (ﷺ) said that whoever turns away from his sunnah is not of him (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

The closing ayat (57:28 to 29)

Surah Al-Hadid 57:28–29

O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (28) [This is] so that the People of the Scripture may know that they are not able [to obtain] anything from the bounty of Allah and that [all] bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty (29)

  • Believers who fear Allah and believe in His Messenger (ﷺ) get a double share of mercy, a light to walk by and forgiveness (57:28).
  • All bounty is in Allah's hand; the People of the Book should know they cannot claim it as theirs (57:29).

The surahs that begin with «سَبَّحَ» or «يُسَبِّحُ» are called the musabbihat. Five of them are in the class 12 syllabus: Al-Hadid (57), Al-Hashr (59), As-Saff (61), Al-Jumu'ah (62) and At-Taghabun (64). (Some scholars also count Al-Isra and Al-A'la, which open with other forms of tasbih.)

  • Tasbih means declaring Allah free from every fault. Everything in the heavens and the earth does it (57:1).
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) recited the musabbihat before sleeping (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).

Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 10Ruku 1: Allah's greatness, faith and spending

Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. The ruku describes His power, His knowledge that no secret escapes, and His being with every person by His knowledge. Then the call is to believe in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) and to spend. The Messenger brings clear ayat to bring people out of darkness into light, and those who spent and fought before the conquest of Makkah are higher in rank.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:3

He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing

Surah Al-Hadid 57:9

It is He who sends down upon His Servant [Muhammad] verses of clear evidence that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And indeed, Allah is to you Kind and Merciful

  • Allah is the First, the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden (57:3).
  • He is with you wherever you are and sees what you do (57:4).
  • Allah sends down clear ayat on His servant to bring you out of darknesses into light (57:9).
  • The spenders before the conquest of Makkah are higher (57:10).
  • Teaching: remembering that Allah sees us makes us honest in secret and in public.

Ruku 2, ayat 11 to 19Ruku 2: The loan, light and the heart

The ruku calls for a goodly loan to Allah, which He multiplies. It shows the light of the believers on the Day of Judgement and the despair of the hypocrites, then asks the believers to soften their hearts, and ends with the reward of the truthful ones and martyrs and the punishment of disbelievers.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:12

On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], "Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment

Surah Al-Hadid 57:16

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient

Surah Al-Hadid 57:18

Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward

  • Whoever lends Allah a goodly loan, He multiplies it (57:11).
  • The hypocrites ask for light and are sent back; a wall separates them (57:13).
  • Hearts should humble themselves at the remembrance of Allah (57:16).
  • Those who believe in Allah and His messengers are the truthful ones and the witnesses with their Lord; for them is their reward and their light (57:19).

Ruku 3, ayat 20 to 25Ruku 3: The world, destiny, messengers

The ruku explains the reality of this world, urges a race towards forgiveness and teaches belief in destiny. It states the purpose of the messengers: they were sent with clear proofs, the Book and the balance, and iron was sent down with them.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:22

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy

  • The world is play, amusement, adornment, boasting and rivalry (57:20).
  • Every calamity is written beforehand (57:22 to 23).
  • Messengers, Book, balance and iron (57:25).

Ruku 4, ayat 26 to 29Ruku 4: Earlier prophets, monasticism and the call to fear Allah

The ruku recalls that Allah sent Hazrat Nuh (AS) and Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and placed prophethood and the Book in their descendants, then followed them with Hazrat Isa (AS). It mentions monasticism, which his followers invented and did not observe properly, and closes by calling on the believers to fear Allah and believe in His Messenger (ﷺ).

Surah Al-Hadid 57:27

Then We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except [that they did so] seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave the ones who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient

Surah Al-Hadid 57:28

O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

  • Prophethood and the Book were placed in the descendants of Nuh (AS) and Ibrahim (AS) (57:26).
  • Monasticism was an innovation (57:27).
  • Fear Allah and believe in His Messenger (ﷺ), and He will give a double portion of mercy and a light to walk by (57:28).

Solutionحل
