Surah An-Nahl
Surah An-Nahl is the 16th surah of the Quran, a Makki surah of 128 ayat and 16 rukus in para 14, named after the bee («النحل») mentioned in 16:68 to 69. It was revealed in the last stage of the Makki period, when the Quraish were hastening the punishment, denying the Quran and persecuting the believers, and some Muslims had already migrated. It is also called Surah an-Ni'am (the surah of blessings) because it counts so many of Allah's favours: cattle, rain, crops, the sea, mountains, milk, honey, homes and clothing. On these blessings it builds tawhid, the truth of the messengers, the Hereafter, and a set of commands and prohibitions (justice, ihsan, giving to relatives, keeping promises, lawful food, calling to Allah with wisdom, patience). FBISE asks about the name, the blessings (long topic 15), the commands and prohibitions (long topic 16) and Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) as an «اُمَّة» (16:120).

Why is it called An-Nahl?
Allah says that He inspired the bee («النَّحْل») to make its houses in the mountains, the trees and the trellises, to eat from all fruits, and that from its belly comes a drink of different colours in which there is healing for people (16:68 to 69). The surah is named after this ayah. The bee is one of the signs of Allah's wisdom and mercy; it is only one of the many blessings the surah counts.
And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct (68) Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought (69)
Why is it also called Surah an-Ni'am?
«النِّعَم» means blessings. The surah counts so many favours of Allah (cattle, rain, crops, the sea, mountains, rivers, milk, honey, houses, tents and clothes) and says that if you try to count them you could not (16:18). For this reason some commentators call it Surah an-Ni'am.
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful
Period and background of revelation
There is no single incident behind the whole surah. It was revealed in the last years in Makkah. The Quraish mocked the warning of punishment («أَتَىٰ أَمْرُ اللّٰه» 16:1), said the Quran was only the legends of the ancients (16:24), claimed that a human being teaches the Prophet (ﷺ) (16:103), kept to their shirk and the customs of forbidding and permitting things by their own words (16:35, 16:116), and tortured the believers. Some Muslims had emigrated (16:41) and others were forced to say words of disbelief under torture (16:106). The surah answers all this with Allah's blessings, proofs of tawhid, the truth of the Messenger (ﷺ) and the Quran, and the certainty of the Hereafter, and it consoles the Prophet (ﷺ) and tells him to be patient (16:127 to 128).

Virtues and special uses
There is no authentic hadith about the reward of reciting the whole surah, so none is given here. The following are the well-known points.
- Honey is a healing (16:69). Hazrat Abu Said al-Khudri (RA) reports that a man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said his brother had a stomach complaint. The Prophet (ﷺ) told him to give him honey to drink. He did so, then came again and again, and the Prophet (ﷺ) repeated the advice, and at last said: Allah has spoken the truth and your brother's stomach has lied; the man gave him honey and he recovered (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- Ayah 16:90 is recited at the end of the Friday sermon. This has been the practice of the Muslims for a very long time, and it is a short reminder of justice, ihsan, kindness to relatives and avoiding indecency, evil and oppression.
- Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA) is reported in some tafsirs to have said that the ayah in the Quran most comprehensive about good and evil is 16:90. This is a report of a Companion in tafsir books, not a hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ).
- The command to seek refuge in Allah from Satan before reciting the Quran is in 16:98, the basis for saying «أَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰه» before recitation.
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded

What the blessings demand of us
- Think and reflect: each list ends with signs for people who think, reason, remember or listen (16:11, 16:12, 16:13, 16:65, 16:67, 16:69).
- Thank Allah, as the ayat say: perhaps you will be grateful (16:14, 16:78), and eat what is lawful and good and be grateful (16:114).
- Worship the Giver alone: those they call besides Allah create nothing (16:17, 16:20 to 21), and they cannot give provision (16:73).
- Do not recognise the favour and then deny it (16:83), and do not turn to others when the hardship is removed (16:53 to 54).
- Fear the end of the ungrateful: the safe city whose people denied Allah's favours was seized with hunger and fear (16:112).
- Use the blessings rightly and share with others (16:71), spending secretly and openly (16:75).
The bee and the signs in animalsشہد کی مکھی اور جانوروں میں نشانیاںOften examined
The surah is named after the bee. Allah says that He inspired («أَوْحَىٰ») the bee, that is, put in it by instinct the knowledge to build its houses and find its food. The ayat give these points.
- It builds houses in the mountains, in the trees and in what people build or trellis (16:68).
- It eats from all kinds of fruits and follows the ways of its Lord laid down for it (16:69).
- From its belly comes a drink of different colours, honey, in which there is healing for people (16:69).
- In this is a sign for people who think (16:69).
Another sign in animals is milk: from the bellies of cattle, from between dung and blood, comes pure milk, pleasant to drink (16:66). The hadith about honey is in the section on virtues.
And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers

Tawhid and the refutation of shirkتوحید اور شرک کی تردیدOften examined
The surah proves tawhid from Allah's creation and blessings, and shows that the partners the mushrikin worship cannot create, give provision or know the unseen.
- Warn that there is no deity except Allah (16:2). Your god is one God (16:22). Do not take two gods (16:51).
- Is He who creates like one who does not create? (16:17). Those they call besides Allah create nothing and are themselves created, dead and not alive (16:20 to 21).
- In hardship they cry to Allah alone, and when He removes it a group of them associates others with their Lord (16:53 to 54).
- They set a share of Allah's provision for things they do not know (16:56). They attribute daughters to Allah, yet dislike a daughter for themselves, when news of a girl makes a face dark and some buried the child (16:57 to 59).
- The idols cannot give any provision from the heavens and the earth (16:73); do not coin similitudes for Allah (16:74).
- The mushrikin said: if Allah had willed we would not have worshipped other than Him. The answer: the earlier peoples said the same; the messengers' duty is clear delivery (16:35). Every nation was sent a messenger to say worship Allah and avoid «الطَّاغُوت» (16:36).
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut." And among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers

The messengers and the Quran
The surah shows that the Messenger (ﷺ) is a man like earlier messengers, that the Quran is from Allah, and answers three objections of the Quraish.
And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message if you do not know (43) [We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought (44)
- All earlier messengers were men to whom Allah sent revelation; ask the people of the Reminder if you do not know (16:43).
- The Messenger (ﷺ) explains to people what was sent down to them (16:44). The Book is to make clear their differences, and a guidance and mercy (16:64).
- On the Day of Judgement Allah will bring the Prophet (ﷺ) as a witness over his people, and the Book is a clarification of all things, guidance, mercy and good news for Muslims (16:89).
| Objection | Ayah | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| "Legends of the former peoples" | 16:24 | They carry their own burdens and those of the people they misguide (16:25) |
| "You are an inventor", when one ayah replaced another | 16:101 | Allah knows best what He sends down; most of them do not know |
| "Only a human being teaches him" | 16:103 | The man they point to speaks a foreign tongue, and this Quran is in clear Arabic |
| Who brought it down? | 16:102 | The Pure Spirit (Jibril) brought it down from your Lord in truth |
Say, [O Muhammad], "The Pure Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims (102) And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches the Prophet." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this Qur'an is [in] a clear Arabic language (103)
Before reciting the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan (16:98); he has no authority over those who believe and trust in their Lord (16:99).
The Hereafter, accountability and the end of the deniers
- Hearts that deny the Hereafter are arrogant; Allah knows what they hide and show and does not love the arrogant (16:22 to 23).
- Those who misguide others will bear their own burdens and part of the burdens of those they misled (16:25).
- The earlier plotters: Allah came at their building from the foundations and the roof fell on them (16:26).
- The angels take the wrongdoers in death; they deny their evil, and are told to enter the gates of Hell (16:28 to 29). The righteous are greeted with peace and told to enter Paradise (16:30 to 32).
- They swear that Allah will not raise the dead; Allah says it is a true promise, and His word when He wills a thing is only "Be" and it is (16:38 to 40).
- On that Day every nation will have a witness; the disbelievers will not be allowed to make excuses and their punishment will not be lightened (16:84 to 85, 16:89).
- On the Day every soul will come arguing for itself and every soul will be paid in full for what it did (16:111).
On the Day when every soul will come disputing for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged
Look at the ending of the deniers: travel in the land and see how the deniers ended (16:36). Allah gives respite, and if He seized people for their wrongdoing He would leave no creature on earth (16:61).
The parables of the surah
| Parable | Ayah | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| A slave who owns nothing and a free man who spends secretly and openly: are they equal? | 16:75 | Allah, the Owner of all, and false gods are not equal |
| A dumb man, a burden to his master, bringing no good, and a man who commands justice on a straight path | 16:76 | Idols cannot speak or help; Allah is the Guide to justice |
| A woman who untwisted her yarn after it was strong | 16:92 | Do not break your oaths and covenants after confirming them |
| A safe and secure city whose people denied Allah's favours | 16:112 | Hunger and fear seized it: ingratitude brings loss of blessings |
Allah presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allah! But most of them do not know
The city of 16:112 is not named in the ayah. The lesson is general: a city with peace and plenty that denies Allah's favours and rejects the messenger sent from among them is punished (16:112 to 113).
Forced disbelief, emigration and patience
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment
- A person forced to say words of disbelief while his heart is at rest in faith is excused; but those who open their hearts to disbelief are under the wrath of Allah (16:106).
- The commentators connect this with Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir (RA), who was tortured by the Quraish and said words of disbelief; the Prophet (ﷺ) asked how he found his heart, and he said it was at rest in faith.
- Those who emigrated for Allah after being wronged will be given a good place in this world and a greater reward in the Hereafter (16:41), they were patient and trusted their Lord (16:42).
- Those who emigrated after being persecuted, then struggled and were patient: your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful (16:110).
Teaching: faith lives in the heart, there is relief in necessity, and the one who leaves home for Allah is not forgotten.
Lawful and forbidden food (16:114 to 119)حلال و حرام خوراک (16:114 تا 119)
Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship (114) He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (115)
- Eat of what Allah has provided, lawful and good, and be grateful if you worship Him (16:114).
- Forbidden are only four things: dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and what is dedicated to other than Allah. Whoever is forced, neither desiring it nor exceeding the limit, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (16:115).
- Do not say with your tongues that this is lawful and this is unlawful, inventing a lie against Allah (16:116). Their enjoyment is brief and their punishment painful (16:117).
- The things forbidden to the Jews were forbidden as a punishment for their own wrongdoing; Allah did not wrong them (16:118). Those who do wrong in ignorance, then repent and mend, find the Lord Forgiving and Merciful (16:119).
Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), an «اُمَّة» (16:120 to 123)حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام «اُمَّة» (16:120 تا 123)Often examined
Allah describes Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) as an «أُمَّة». The word means a whole nation or a leader who gathers in himself the qualities of a nation, an example for others. This is the answer to the model paper MCQ 9.
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah (120) [He was] grateful for His favors. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path (121) And We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous (122) Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah (123)

Allah then told the Prophet (ﷺ) to follow the religion of Ibrahim, inclining to truth, who was not of the polytheists (16:123). The Sabbath was imposed only on those who differed about it, and Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection (16:124).
Da'wah with wisdom and patience (16:125 to 128)حکمت سے دعوت اور صبر (16:125 تا 128)Often examined
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided
- Three ways to invite: wisdom («حِكْمَة»), good advice («مَوْعِظَة حَسَنَة»), and arguing in the best way (16:125).
- Allah knows best who strays and who is guided; the caller's duty is to deliver (16:125, 16:82).
- If you punish, punish equal to what was done to you; patience is better (16:126).
- Be patient, and your patience is only by Allah; do not grieve over them nor be distressed by their plots (16:127).
- Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good (16:128).
And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire (127) Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good (128)

Rukus 1 to 2, ayat 1 to 21Rukus 1 to 2: the command of Allah and the blessings
Ruku 1 (1 to 9): the command of Allah is coming, so do not hasten it (16:1). Angels bring revelation to whom He wills: warn that there is no deity but Allah (16:2). Heavens and earth are created in truth and man from a sperm-drop (16:3 to 4). Cattle, horses, mules and donkeys are blessings (16:5 to 8), and guidance of the right way is upon Allah (16:9).
Ruku 2 (10 to 21): rain, crops, night, day, sun, moon, stars, the sea, mountains, rivers and roads (16:10 to 16). Is He who creates like him who does not create? (16:17). You cannot count Allah's favours (16:18). Those invoked besides Allah create nothing and are dead (16:20 to 21).
The command of Allah is coming, so be not impatient for it. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him
And it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

That they may bear their own burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without knowledge. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear
