Surah Al-Mujadilah
Surah Al-Mujadilah is the 58th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 22 ayat and 3 rukus in para 28. It was revealed in Madinah, about 5 AH in the common view, after Hazrat Khawlah bint Tha'labah (RA) complained to the Prophet (ﷺ) that her husband had pronounced zihar on her. It gives the ruling and expiation of zihar, forbids evil secret counsels, teaches the etiquette of gatherings, orders charity before consulting the Messenger (ﷺ) for a time, and separates the party of Allah from the party of Shaytan. FBISE asked for two etiquettes of a gathering in the model paper (Q.2 (a)(iv) OR), and zihar and the etiquette of gatherings are long topics 18 and 19.

Name and the reason for it
The name comes from «تُجَادِلُكَ» in 58:1: "Allah has heard the speech of the woman who disputes with you concerning her husband." «الْمُجَادِلَة» is the woman who argued, that is Hazrat Khawlah bint Tha'labah (RA). Some read the name as «الْمُجَادَلَة» (the dispute).
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing
Period and occasion of revelation
- Hazrat Khawlah bint Tha'labah (RA) was the wife of Hazrat Aws bin as-Samit (RA). In a moment of anger he pronounced zihar on her, saying she was to him like his mother's back, which in the days of ignorance meant a permanent separation.
- She came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and put her case, saying she had spent her youth with him and had his children, and that she would be ruined if separated. She also turned to Allah in her complaint. Then 58:1 to 4 came down.
- Hazrat Aishah (RA) said: Glory to Allah who hears all things; I was in a corner of the room and part of her words was hidden from me, yet Allah heard her (Nasai, Ibn Majah).
- The rest of the surah deals with secret counsels, the etiquette of assemblies, the charity before consultation and the loyalty to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
Central theme
The central theme is that Allah hears and sees everything and that the community must be built on obedience to Him: just family law (zihar), clean social behaviour (no evil counsels, respect in gatherings), reverence for the Messenger (ﷺ), and loyalty only to Allah's party, not to His enemies.

- Allah heard the complaint of a woman and sent down a ruling for all believers. This shows Allah's mercy and the importance of justice for women (58:1).
- Knowledge: Allah raises "those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge" in degrees (58:11). The Prophet (ﷺ) said that Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others (Sahih Muslim).
- The final ayah (58:22): Allah is pleased with His believing servants and they are pleased with Him. They are the party of Allah and they are the successful.

Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing (1) Those who pronounce thihar among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving (2)
- Allah has heard the woman who disputes with the Prophet (ﷺ) about her husband and complains to Allah; Allah hears the conversation of both (58:1).
- Those who pronounce zihar on their wives: the wives are not their mothers; their mothers are only those who gave birth to them. What they say is «مُنْكَرًا مِّنَ الْقَوْلِ وَزُوْرًا», an objectionable word and a falsehood, but Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving (58:2).
Zihar: meaning and the custom before Islam
- Zihar («ظِهَار», from «ظَهْر» back): a husband says to his wife, "You are to me like my mother's back", comparing her to a woman forbidden to him.
- In the days of ignorance this was treated as a permanent divorce: the woman was neither a wife nor free to marry again and was left hanging.
- Islam ended this injustice: zihar is a sinful word but it does not end the marriage.
The rulings and the expiation (58:3 to 4)
And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do (3) And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment (4)
- If the husband wishes to go back to his wife, he must first pay the expiation (kaffarah) before they touch one another.
- First, free a slave. If he cannot, fast two months consecutively. If he cannot, feed sixty poor people (58:3 to 4).
- Purpose: so that you believe in Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) and keep within the limits of Allah; for those who reject there is a painful punishment (58:4).
58:5 to 6Opposition to Allah and His Messenger
Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment (5) On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allah is, over all things, Witness (6)
- Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) will be humiliated, as those before them were humiliated; Allah has sent down clear ayat (58:5).
- On the Day of Judgement Allah will raise them all and tell them what they did: Allah has counted it though they forgot (58:6).
- The word «يُحَآدُّوْنَ» (they oppose) is in the 80 words.
58:7 to 10Secret counsels (najwa)سرگوشیاں (نجویٰ)Often examined
Have you not considered that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing
- Allah knows all that is in the heavens and the earth. There is no secret counsel of three but He is the fourth, nor of five but He is the sixth, nor fewer or more but He is with them wherever they are, by His knowledge (58:7).
- Then He will tell them on the Day of Judgement what they did (58:7).
The wrong najwa (58:8)
Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation, then they return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allah does not greet you and say among themselves, "Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination
- Some people (the Jews and hypocrites) had been forbidden najwa, but returned to it, whispering about sin, aggression and disobedience to the Messenger (ﷺ).
- They greeted him with words that Allah does not use. Hazrat Aishah (RA) reported that some Jews greeted the Prophet (ﷺ) with "as-samu alaykum" (death be upon you) and he replied only with "wa alaykum" (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- They said among themselves, "Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?" Hell is enough for them (58:8).
The right najwa (58:9 to 10)
O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear Allah, to whom you will be gathered (9) Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed, but he will not harm them at all except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely (10)
- Believers should converse about righteousness and taqwa, not about sin and aggression (58:9).
- The evil najwa is from Shaytan to grieve the believers, but it cannot harm them without Allah's permission; believers should rely on Allah (58:10).
- Hadith: when three are together, two should not whisper apart leaving the third, because it grieves him (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
58:9 to 11Etiquette of gatheringsمجلس کے آدابOften examined
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do
The etiquettes in 58:11

Background
According to commentators, the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting in a small place when some of the Companions who had fought at Badr arrived and there was no room for them; the others were slow to move, so they were told to make room and rise. The wisdom is respect for others and obedience of the Messenger (ﷺ).
Other etiquettes from the hadith and the surah
- No secret whispering that grieves others, and converse in righteousness (58:9 to 10).
- Do not make a man get up from his seat and sit in it (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Ibn Umar (RA)).
58:12 to 13Charity before private consultation
O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (12) Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allah has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do (13)
- Command: before a private consultation with the Messenger (ﷺ), offer a charity; that is better for you and purer (58:12). Whoever cannot afford it, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
- Reasons: to lighten the Prophet's (ﷺ) burden from those who took his time without need, and to separate the sincere from the hypocrites.
- Relaxation (58:13): "Have you feared to give charities before your consultation?" Since you did not and Allah pardoned you, establish prayer, give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
- Hazrat Ali (RA) is reported to have said that he was the only one to act on this ayah; he gave a dirham before each consultation, and then the command was relaxed (Tirmidhi).

Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying] (14) Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing (15) They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah, and for them is a humiliating punishment (16) Never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally (17) On the Day Allah will resurrect them all, and they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are [standing] on something. Unquestionably, it is they who are the liars (18) Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers (19)
The hypocrites (58:14 to 19)
- They make friends with a people with whom Allah is angry; they are neither with the Muslims nor with them, and they swear to falsehood knowingly (58:14).
- They take their oaths as a shield and turn people away from Allah's path (58:16).
- Their wealth and children will never avail them against Allah; they are companions of the Fire (58:17).
- On the Day of Judgement they will swear to Allah as they swear to you and think they have something; they are the liars (58:18).
- Shaytan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah; they are the party of Shaytan and the losers (58:19).
Allah's victory (58:20 to 21)
Indeed, the ones who oppose Allah and His Messenger - those will be among the most humbled (20) Allah has written, "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might (21)
- Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) will be among the most humiliated (58:20).
- Allah has written, "I and My messengers will surely prevail"; Allah is Powerful and Mighty (58:21).
The party of Allah (58:22)
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those - He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him - those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah - they are the successful
- True believers do not love anyone who opposes Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), even if they are their fathers, sons, brothers or relatives.
- For them Allah has written faith in their hearts, supported them with a spirit from Him, and will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow; Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him.
- They are the party of Allah, and the party of Allah are the successful.
- Tafsir mention: Companions such as Hazrat Abu Ubaydah (RA) are said to have fought relatives at Badr for Allah's sake.
Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 6Ruku 1: Khawlah and zihar
Allah heard the complaint of Hazrat Khawlah (RA), declared zihar a false and objectionable word, and set the expiation. The ruku ends with the warning to those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) and the reminder that Allah has counted every deed.
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing
- Allah hears every conversation (58:1).
- Zihar does not make a wife a mother (58:2).
- Expiation: slave, two months of fasting, or feeding sixty poor (58:3 to 4).
Ruku 2, ayat 7 to 13Ruku 2: Najwa, gatherings and charity
Allah is with every secret meeting by His knowledge. Evil whispering is condemned, good whispering is allowed. The believers are taught to make room in gatherings, and to offer charity before consulting the Messenger (ﷺ), which was then relaxed.
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do
O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful
- Najwa is allowed in righteousness, forbidden in sin (58:9 to 10).
- Make room and rise when asked (58:11).
- Charity before consultation, then relaxed (58:12 to 13).
Ruku 3, ayat 14 to 22Ruku 3: The two parties
The hypocrites and their friends are exposed and the party of Shaytan is described as the losers. The ruku ends by contrasting them with the party of Allah, who are the successful.
Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers
