Surah Al-Hashr

Class 12 Tarjama-tul-Quran, unit 10

Surah Al-Hashr is the 59th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 24 ayat and 3 rukus in para 28, and one of the musabbihat. It was revealed in 4 AH after the exile of the Jewish tribe Banu an-Nadir from Madinah. It teaches the lesson of that exile, the rules of fay' with the principle that wealth must not circulate only among the rich, the merit of the Muhajirin and the ithar of the Ansar, the weakness of the hypocrites, accountability for tomorrow, the greatness of the Quran and Allah's beautiful names. FBISE asks about its introduction, fay' (long topic 20) and the ayat 59:7, 59:9, 59:18, 59:21 and 59:22 to 24.

Name and the reason for it

The surah is named «الْحَشْر» from 59:2: "It is He who expelled those who disbelieved among the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering («لِاَوَّلِ الْحَشْرِ»)." «حَشْر» means gathering together or driving out; "the first gathering" is the first exile of the Jews from Arabia, as the common view takes it. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) used to call it Surah an-Nadir (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Surah Al-Hashr 59:2

It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision

Period and occasion of revelation

  • Banu an-Nadir were a Jewish tribe living in fortresses and date orchards on the outskirts of Madinah. They had a treaty with the Prophet (ﷺ).
  • In 4 AH they broke the treaty. According to the sirah books, when the Prophet (ﷺ) went to them to help with blood money, they plotted to drop a stone on him from a roof; he was informed by revelation and left.
  • They were ordered to leave Madinah within ten days. Abdullah bin Ubayy and the hypocrites promised them help, so they refused and were besieged for a short time; then Allah cast terror in their hearts and they surrendered.
  • They were allowed to leave with whatever their camels could carry, except weapons. Many went to Khaybar and others to Syria. Surah Al-Hashr was revealed after this and comments on the whole event.

Central theme

The central theme is the exile of Banu an-Nadir as a lesson that opposing Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) brings ruin, and the rules, such as fay', that Islam made for the new community. It also praises the Muhajirin and the Ansar, exposes the hypocrites, calls for accountability for the Hereafter, and closes with the greatness of the Quran and Allah's beautiful names.

Hadith of Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud and TirmidhiVirtues connected with Surah Al-Hashr

  • The musabbihat: the Prophet (ﷺ) recited the surahs that begin with tasbih, among them Al-Hashr, before sleeping (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).
  • Names of Allah: the Prophet (ﷺ) said that Allah has ninety-nine names, and whoever memorises them (and acts by them) will enter Paradise (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Many of the names are in 59:22 to 24.
  • The Ansar: the Prophet (ﷺ) said that love of the Ansar is a sign of faith and hatred of them a sign of hypocrisy (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). 59:9 praises them.
  • The last three ayat: a report in Tirmidhi says that whoever recites three times in the morning «اَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ السَّمِيْعِ الْعَلِيْمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطٰنِ الرَّجِيْمِ» and the last three ayat of Al-Hashr, Allah appoints seventy thousand angels to pray for him until evening (reported by Tirmidhi; graded weak by many scholars, so mention it only with this note).

Surah Al-Hashr 59:1–5

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise (1) It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision (2) And if not that Allah had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire (3) That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah - then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty (4) Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks - it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient (5)

  • The surah opens with the tasbih of everything in the heavens and the earth; Allah is the Mighty, the Wise (59:1).
  • Allah expelled the disbelievers among the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering. The Muslims did not think they would leave and the Jews thought their fortresses would protect them from Allah (59:2).
  • Allah came upon them from where they did not expect and cast terror into their hearts; they destroyed their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. "So take a lesson, O people of vision" (59:2).
  • Had Allah not decreed exile for them, He would have punished them in this world; in the Hereafter they have the punishment of the Fire (59:3). The reason: they opposed Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) (59:4).
  • Palm trees: whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing was by Allah's permission, to disgrace the disobedient (59:5). The Prophet (ﷺ) had some of the date trees of Banu an-Nadir cut and burnt, and this ayah settled the doubt (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Lessons

  • Power, fortresses and wealth cannot protect those who oppose Allah.
  • Breaking treaties and plotting against the truth ends in ruin.
  • Take a lesson from history: «

And what Allah restored [of property] to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent (6) And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty (7)

What is fay'?

Fay' («فَيْء») is property that comes to the Islamic state from the enemy without a battle: the Muslims did not spur horses or camels for it (59:6). It differs from ghanimah, the spoils of war taken by fighting (8:41).

  • The near relatives (of the Prophet (ﷺ)), orphans, the needy and the traveller.
  • The Muhajirin who were poor (59:8) and the Ansar and those who came after them (59:9 to 10) have a claim on it.

The principle

اصول

  • «كَيْ لَا يَكُوْنَ دُوْلَةً بَيْنَ الْاَغْنِيَآءِ مِنْكُمْ», so that wealth does not circulate only among the rich of you. This is the basic principle of Islam's economy.
  • «وَمَا اٰتٰىكُمُ الرَّسُوْلُ فَخُذُوْهُ وَمَا نَهٰىكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوْا»: whatever the Messenger (ﷺ) gives you, take; whatever he forbids you, abstain. Hazrat Ibn Masud (RA) quoted this ayah to prove the Prophet's (ﷺ) prohibitions are binding (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
  • Practice: the Prophet (ﷺ) used part of the property of Banu an-Nadir for the needs of his household for the year and put the rest into weapons and horses in Allah's way (Hazrat Umar (RA), Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). He gave land mostly to the poor Muhajirin and to two poor Ansar (reported in the sirah books).

  • The poor Muhajirin were driven out of their homes and wealth, seeking Allah's bounty and pleasure and helping Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). Allah calls them «الصَّادِقُوْنَ», the truthful.

The Ansar and ithar (59:9)

Surah Al-Hashr 59:9

And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful

  • The Ansar had their home in Madinah and faith before the Muhajirin came. They love those who emigrated to them.
  • They feel no envy in their hearts for what was given to the Muhajirin from the fay'.
  • They give preference («يُؤْثِرُوْنَ») to others over themselves even in poverty. Whoever is saved from the greed of his own soul is among the successful (59:9).
  • Example: an Ansari Companion (reported to be Hazrat Abu Talha (RA)) hosted a guest of the Prophet (ﷺ) with the little food he had, let his children sleep hungry and put out the lamp so the guest could eat. The Prophet (ﷺ) praised his deed, and this ayah was revealed (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Those who came after (59:10)

Surah Al-Hashr 59:10

And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful

  • They pray: "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not put in our hearts any resentment toward those who believed. Our Lord, You are Kind and Merciful."
  • Lesson: later Muslims must speak well of the Companions and keep their hearts free of hatred for any believer.

59:11 to 17The hypocrites and Banu an-Nadir

Surah Al-Hashr 59:11–12

Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars (11) If they are expelled, they will not leave with them, and if they are fought, they will not aid them. And [even] if they should aid them, they will surely turn their backs; then [thereafter] they will not be aided (12)

  • The hypocrites said to their brothers among the People of the Book, "If you are expelled, we will go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you; if you are fought, we will help you." Allah testified that they are liars (59:11).
  • They will not leave with them, they will not help them, and if they do, they will turn their backs (59:12).
  • They fear the believers more than Allah because they do not understand (59:13).
  • They will not fight together except in fortified towns or behind walls; their hearts are divided, though they seem united (59:14).
  • Their example is like those just before them, who tasted the evil result of their action (59:15). It is also like Shaytan who tells man to disbelieve and then disowns him; both end in the Fire (59:16 to 17).

59:18 to 20Accountability for tomorrow

Surah Al-Hashr 59:18–20

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do (18) And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient (19) Not equal are the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise. The companions of Paradise - they are the attainers [of success] (20)

  • "O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow, and fear Allah" (59:18). This ayah is often recited in the Friday sermon.
  • Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so Allah made them forget themselves (59:19).
  • The companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise are not equal; the companions of Paradise are the successful (59:20).

59:21The greatness of the Quran

Surah Al-Hashr 59:21

If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought

  • If Allah had sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and splitting apart from the fear of Allah (59:21).
  • These are the examples Allah gives to people so that they may reflect.
  • Lesson: if a mountain would tremble before the Quran, a human heart should tremble more; read it with understanding.

Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 10Ruku 1: The exile and the fay'

The ruku tells of the exile of Banu an-Nadir and its lesson, then gives the rules of fay' with the principle that wealth must not circulate only among the rich, and praises the Muhajirin, the Ansar and those who came after.

Surah Al-Hashr 59:7

And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty

  • Take a lesson, O people of vision (59:2).
  • Wealth must not circulate only among the rich (59:7).
  • The Ansar prefer others over themselves (59:9).

Ruku 2, ayat 11 to 17Ruku 2: The hypocrites

The hypocrites' false promises to Banu an-Nadir are exposed. They will neither leave with them nor help them, are cowards, and are divided in their hearts. Their example is Shaytan and the man he misleads.

Surah Al-Hashr 59:11

Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars

Surah Al-Hashr 59:14

They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason

  • They are liars, cowards and divided (59:11 to 14).
  • The example of Shaytan who disowns his followers (59:16).

Ruku 3, ayat 18 to 24Ruku 3: Accountability, the Quran and the names

The believers are told to fear Allah and think about the Hereafter. The greatness of the Quran is shown by the mountain example, and the surah ends with Allah's beautiful names.

Surah Al-Hashr 59:18

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do

Surah Al-Hashr 59:21

If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought

Surah Al-Hashr 59:24

He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise

  • Look to what you have sent ahead for tomorrow (59:18).
  • The Quran would split a mountain (59:21).
  • To Allah belong the best names (59:24).
